My Girlfriend and I Want to Teach English in Japan, But We Don't have degrees.

by Nikolai

Basically me and my girlfriend really want to go and teach English in Japan, but we don't have degrees. This has obviously made our search for work really difficult. How would you recommend proceeding? Is it possible for someone without a degree to find TEFL work in Japan?

My Girl Friend and I Want to Teach in Japan But No Degree
by: John

Nikolai,

That is not the end of the road. If you have other qualifications, so for example you are a specialty in welding or making specialty foods, carpentry etc. You can get a work visa.

They key to this lock is that you need to be able to do something that could not be hired out by the Japanese government. You can apply for a visa and be accepted. Pending of course all the paper work.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that a visa is a one shot deal. Just because you can ARC weld for example, doesn't mean she can or would be accepted and put together in the same location. She needs to bring her stuff too.

Her specialty may not be ARC welding. So relative to this, decisions on visas get made. But you can always get a tourist visa of 90 days. Perhaps in that time things will get clear in both of your minds.

So in short, we think you should think about what you can bring to the table.

I hope this is of some help to you.
